Alain. 39. Brüssel. Architekt/Produktdesigner/Creative Director.
Alain Berteau ist gebürtiger Deutscher, schloß mit 25 Jahren sein Architekturstudium ab und eröffnete im Jahre 2002 sein eigenes Architekturbüro in Brüssel. Dieses entwickelte sich mittlerweile zu einer etablierten, international agierenden und mit Preisen ausgezeichneten Produkt/Innenarchitektur-Agentur. In seiner Arbeit verschreibt sich Berteau der Entwicklung und dem Vorantreiben relevanter Designlösungen durch innovative Techniken, funktionale Verbesserungen mit kraftvoller Einfachheit und mühelosem Umweltschutz.
Seine Kreationen sind einfach, jedoch sprunghaft und intensiv, sie stellen die etablierten Typologien in Frage und schlagen Lösungen vor, die neuen Verhaltensweisen gerecht werden. Er selbst sagt: “Wir leben in einem globalen Entertainment-Zeitalter. In solch einem Kontext müssen selbst die relevantesten und offensichtlichsten Ideen mit Spaß kombinierbar sein, um Erfolg zu haben.” Alain Berteau war der Erste, der entscheidende umweltfreundliche Erfindungen auf den Markt brachte, u.a. verpackungsstrukturierte Produkte und lärmgedämpfte Büroartikel.
Um sein umfangreiches Wissen weiterzugeben wurde ihm 2005 eine Designprofessur angeboten. Seit dem lehrt der 39-jährige an der Cambre Kunsthochschule in der europäischen Hauptstadt Brüssel. Bei der 2006 stattfindenden Interieur-Kortrijk-Biennale wurde er als Designer des Jahres ausgezeichnet, in Dänemark 2008 beim INDEX Design Award zum Finalisten gekürt. Bei der letzten Bordeaux Agora Biennale war er Ehrengast.
Alain Berteau ist nicht nur Creative Director bei FELD, rvB und OBJEKTEN sondern darüber hinaus auch einer der fünf Kuratoren der aktuellen smart urban stage Brüssel.

1. It all started …
when I was a kid, drawing all the time. Dismantling nature, insects and machines trying to understand how it works …

2. To me my job is like …
not a job at all. I’m lucky enough to make money doing my passions (architecture and industrial design),
so I’m working all the time, but it’s not a job, it’s just daily life.

3. A normal day at work is usually like this:
Morning brief with staff, then travelling between office, clients and factories, I work in a somewhat nomadic way, working a lot in taxis, trains, or planes.

4. The biggest influence on my work has …
Jazz music: a certain idea of mastering something at the highest levels while beeing completely free to look for new solutions, to innovate. But in order to do it you need to learn and respect some rules, then break them and establish your own, in a way. You better understand and respect historic works, not just the image or the idea of historic works.
Like Bill Evans once said, it’s “… freedom with responsability”.
