REFlection: Adam Shecter

Adam. 33. NYC. Artist and elementary school teacher.

1. What does the word „DOING“ mean in your world?

Doing means putting aside the time to make your work in a meaningful way, giving it the time it needs.

2. What does „DOING NOTHING“ mean in your world?

Doing nothing seems like doing.  In New York, you’re supposed to be doing something with someone, somewhere…all the time.  And if you’re always doing that you’re doing lots of things but nothing at the same time.  But doing nothing can be really nice, you have to do nothing sometimes so you can do something.

YOUR WORK

1. It all started when I …

Read “The Magic Whistle” comic by Sam Henderson when I was 19.  I always loved art but never felt like I could do it.  His work is totally stupid and brilliant at the same time.  It introduced me to DIY culture and zines.  I thought “I can do that!”

2. To me my job is like …

A balance of supporting myself and making time for my art.  I teach 6-10 year olds technology at an all boys school.  It makes me think a lot about an audience for my art.  I want to make “all ages work.” Work for everyone does not mean it is easy.  I hope anyone can approach it and leave with something.

3. A normal day at work is usually like this:

Go to work.  Teach.  Do some sketching/animations.  Go exercise or to the Movies.  Work in studio at home.  Hang out with Boyfriend.  Repeat.

4. The biggest influence on my work has/have …

The films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, AKA “The Archers.”  They made the most beautiful films of all time.  Experimental, strange, and yet totally accessable on the most important level.  I just got a tattoo of David Niven on my shoulder from my favorite of their movies, “A Matter of Life and Death.”

5. My latest project is called:

“Last Men”

6. Itʼs about …

It’s a animation and video inspired by the 1930’s humanist/philosophical science fiction of Olaf Stapledon.  He had more ideas in one page than many authors will cover in an entire book.  “Last Men” is a sort of future history documentation of the human race and the universe.  Abridged.

YOUR LIFE

1. This is what I am today:

Moving Forward.

2. This is what my parents always wanted:

Not totally sure.  They are very supportive of my art as long as I’m not asking them for money.  : )

3. This is what I pictured to be easier in life:

Being able to follow a recipe.  I can’t do more than two things in the kitchen at once.

4. And this what I pictured to be a lot harder than it is/was:

These questions.
